On March 21, members of the American Red Cross of Southern Missouri and the Springfield Fire Dept. took the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign to the 65803 area code.

Red Cross volunteers and staff with firefighters canvassed 57 homes. Forty-two families were educated on fire safety with 25 alarms being installed and 11 batteries replaced.

Volunteers went door-to-door, in pairs, to talk with residents of the high-risk neighborhood about smoke alarms and fire safety. One goal of the canvassing event is to help families prevent home fires by taking some basic safety measures and ensuring each home is equipped with working smoke alarms. The effort locally is sponsored by KYTV.
