Academy training continues in Poplar Bluff; prepares for 2015

academyHave you heard of the Academy? You haven’t? Let me tell you about it. It’s a training extravaganza! The Southern Missouri Region of the American Red Cross and Missouri Southern State University combine forces to prepare community members for potential disasters and to teach participants how to adapt and recover from a disaster. All of the training courses revolve around preparedness and resiliency. Some of the courses include Active Shooter in Schools Seminar, Government Operations Fundamentals, and Digital Volunteer Training. This event welcomes anyone and everyone. We strongly encourage our community partners and volunteers to participate!

This year’s Academy 2014 for Joplin took place from May 29 through May 31. It was a smashing success! There were many participants and partners from the community. The Red Cross happily presented 112 certificates to participants who completed courses (we’re like a proud mama). Joan Brown has been a beloved Red Cross volunteer since 2007. She was kind enough to volunteer and work Registration for the big event. According to Joan, it is important for people to attend. You will learn a wealth of information that could save a life, including your own.

If you missed the Academy this year, you can still participate next year! Kristan Lee, Volunteer Training Specialist, is very excited for next year’s Academy. She said that the Red Cross is very excited to have people working together and building a stronger community. The Academy is a great way to channel teamwork within the community, while learning valuable life skills. Next year, the Red Cross would love to see the Academy have a stronger role as a community event, inviting churches and different businesses to join. They are also anticipating more opportunities for the youth to become involved. Academy 2015 is definitely an event you will not want to miss!
