American Red Cross Shelter Transitions to Smaller Facility

JOPLIN, MO – June 10, 2011 – The American Red Cross shelter located on the campus of Missouri Southern State University will be closing as of 5pm Tuesday June 14th. As the recovery process progresses, we are encouraged by the fact that the number of overnight stays at the shelter have decreased to the point that it can now be moved to a smaller facility.

Everyone is encouraged to work with available State and Federal government agencies and housing resources to find permanent housing as quickly as possible. The Red Cross will provide housing assistance on a case by case basis for those individuals who still have continued emergency housing needs.

As Joplin residents continue to clean-up and rebuild after the May 22nd tornado, your American Red Cross remains in the community to assist with recovery efforts. The Greater Ozarks Chapter has offices and volunteers located throughout South Western Missouri and will continue providing communities with immediate disaster needs, comfort and hope.

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit www.redcross.org <http://www.redcross.org/> or join our blog at http://blog.redcross.org <http://blog.redcross.org/> .

The Red Cross depends on financial donations to help in times of disaster, both here in the United States and around the world. Those who want to help can make a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. To make a donation call 1-800-RED-CROSS, visit www.redcross.org or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Contributions may also be sent to local American Red Cross chapters or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.
